Join Brightside St. Louis Saturday, June 4th, 2022 for this year’s St. Louis Urban Gardening Symposium located at Brightside St. Louis’ Demonstration Garden at 4646 Shenandoah Avenue.
*limited virtual participation available
The symposium will feature two special guest speakers leading hour-long presentations. We’re pleased to have Gerardo Camilo, Ph.D., Biology professor at Saint Louis University and Scott Woodbury, Horticulture Manager at Missouri Botanical Garden’s Shaw Nature Reserve join us this year! These two presentations will be offered virtually as well.
Following these special presentations, two 30-minute workshops led by experts in their respective fields will help gardeners learn how to plan, plant and care for a neighborhood or home garden. There will be opportunities to “Ask the MO Dept. of Conservation (MDC) Experts” between sessions and to purchase native plants after the workshops!
Concurrent Workshops
Gardening for Birds & Bees
Birds are beautiful and fun to watch. Find out which trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses our winged friends prefer for food and shelter and see what these plants look like growing in our Demonstration Garden. Don’t forget about beneficial insects like bees that help bring balance to a garden’s ecosystem, leading to healthier and more productive plants. Learn about these amazing creatures and how you can create native habitats that will attract them to your garden.
Plant Healthcare & Soil
Having healthy soil is the first step in creating a healthy garden. Different plants prefer different soil conditions and knowing the nutrient content, physical properties, pH and contaminants present in your soil are important for the health of your plants. Beyond this, it’s important to learn the best management practices for keeping your plants healthy and your garden looking its best. Learn to identify common weeds, pests and diseases and how to minimize damage to your plants.
