Dr. Shiva’s talk, titled Earth Democracy, will explore the ways environmental issues affect our democratic institutions and how environmental action protects human rights.

Dr. Vandana Shiva completed her Ph.D. on the ‘Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory’ at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Since that time she has expanded her work, doing interdisciplinary research on environmental policy, founding the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology in 1982. In 1991 she founded Navdanya, an Indian NGO dedicated to promoting biodiversity, organic farming, and seed preservation. Today her activism focuses on GMOs, intellectual property rights, bioethics, women’s rights, and agriculture worker conditions in India and around the world. Dr. Shiva has appeared in a number of notable documentaries and published many books about feminism, Indian politics, and environmental issues. In 2003, Time Magazine described her as an environmental “hero” and in 2010, Forbes Magazine included her as one of the “Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe.” Dr. Vandana Shiva has earned a number of honorary degrees and international awards for her environmental work and promotion of peace.
